Remember that old song from Billy Joel titled Goodnight Saigon? My favorite passage is when Billy says
And who was wrong? And who was right? It didn’t matter in the thick of the fights
Bringing it back to HTML5 and the scary lack of uniform browser support, I see this:
I just need a RANGE component. I get a slider that looks like a slider in Chrome 26 (top) and Opera 12. I get a plain textbox in Firefox 20. I get a blue-ish line in Internet Explorer 10. (It’s Windows 7, but please don’t tell me I need Windows 8 for a better UX…).
In the thick of development, it doesn’t matter who’s wrong and who’s right. Facts I see are:
1) No way I go crazy with Modernizr
2) No way I go crazy with tons of JS libs promising a magic that just doesn’t survive browser diffs
3) Best browser in town is Google Chrome. Period.
HTML input is the BEST of HTML5 and we’re far from having a decent cross-browser experience on this. Sadly.
